| Hammering home a point: It's good to be handy
I'd been hanging doors in the trapezoidal frames of my brother's old house. Sawdust clung to my clothing and had even found its way into my hair. Earlier in the day, I had contorted myself into the tiny cabinet beneath the kitchen sink to fix a leak, and I had run a string of receptacles in the basement. My sweaty T-shirt and tattered jeans were dirty, and a cut on my knuckle had crusted over with dried blood - not exactly the way I looked on campus. My appearance was nothing new or unusual. I always do renovation or repair work between semesters and on weekends, and it often leaves me smudged and sometimes scarred. I'm not complaining; I like the work, always have, and I'm pretty good at it. In ninth grade, aptitude tests indicated that I might best be served by learning the electrical trade; it was clear I'd never be a neurosurgeon or a CPA.
