| Boilermaker, One Week Later
Last Sunday was the 30th annual Boilermaker 15k road race in lovely Utica, NY. This is perhaps the biggest event in central NY during the summer. This year, the Boilermaker attracted over 12,000 entrants along with an elite field of national and international talent. In other words, it's not your average Sunday morning 5k benefit run won in a blistering 19:36 by a guy wearing Teva sandals. If you're interested in the results, you can find them here or use the database found here to find results from prior years along with news clips and such. One of the things I like about this race is the two day long expo. I get to see and meet a lot of people and usually snag a good deal on some running shoes. I also get to pick up our "goodie bags". Boilermaker goodie bags contain all kinds of stuff, the most important being the 12 ounce pub glass with that year's race logo on it.
Home resales at 4 1/2 -year low
But Monica Stearns' family sold their home in Libertyville this month after listing it in May and describes herself as a bargain hunter. "We've been actively looking for about six weeks, and probably checked out more than 20 homes," Stearns said. She and her husband, Frank, are "very close" to making an offer on a home in south suburban Frankfort, she said. "We realize it's a buyer's market, and we want to get a good deal," she said. "If priced correctly, marketed reasonably and located in a good neighborhood, the property will sell," said Chicago agent Mario Greco. "The biggest of those things is the price." Nationwide, home prices had been trending downward for months but they improved slightly in June, the Realtors said.
In this farmhouse, past and present peacefully coexist
RAYNHAM -- Standing on the narrow farmer's porch on the breezeway of this New England farmhouse a visitor has choices: left heads into the past, right to the present. Left takes you back to and into the living room of the original house, with its welcoming fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows that draw in light like a sun sponge. Knots abound in the original wooden flooring and current owners have kept the country-living theme. A small bedroom and full bath are off the living room. Upstairs is the master bedroom and a third bedroom, which now houses bunk beds for three rambunctious boys. A half-bath completes the floor. Closets are adequate, but not large. At the other end of the renovated breezeway -- which is heated by a pellet stove -- what was once the attached barn is now a kitchen big enough to be a small restaurant.
